Is Brendan Rodgers running out of time at Liverpool?

A lot of the talk throughout the summer and at the beginning of this season surrounding Liverpool is whether Brendan Rodgers should still be in charge of the club or how long will he get this season to turn things around. Two seasons ago was the closest Liverpool have got to winning the Premier League with Rodgers at the helm this seems to have really added extra time and given Rodgers some breathing space following bad results and failed signings.

Under the management of Brendan Rodgers the club has spent £291,550,000 million on 31 players, 18 players are still owned by the club with some out on loan. The majority of the Brendan Rodgers signings could be considered to be flops, with only a select few really proving to be successful signings. Phillipe Coutinho no doubt is a top player and has really proved to be a top signing, but how long can he stay at a club who will struggle to qualify for the Champions League. Daniel Sturridge was signed and when he is fit he a top striker, such a good finisher in one-on-one situations, the problem is keeping him fit. Emre Can could be as good as he wants to be really, not a defender though and this season should really see him blossoming in the heart of the Liverpool midfield that really needs quality. The only other player who could be perceived a real success for the club could maybe be Joe Allen, a good player who when he does not play looks like he missed by his team, although at £15 million he was not cheap and has yet to set the world alight. Simon Mignolet could be considered a success but he still looks like a mistake waiting to happen at times.

Whilst the other players haven’t all flopped out right, they’ve struggled in part because the manager has played them out of position so often. Players such as Lazar Markovic who was played as a right wing back last campaign; is a forward minded player and would play in a front three. Mamadou Sakho, so highly rated in France for his no nonsense nature, has never been blessed as a ball playing defender, yet is asked to take the ball from his keeper nine times out of ten. Adam Lallana was another one asked to do the wing back job last season, or stay out wide with no license; to accommodate Coutinho. Most famously Mario Balotelli who most in the world of football knows cannot play as a lone striker yet Rodgers played him up front on his own. These are not bad footballers, but they’ve experienced bad management. This season looks to follow tradition of playing players where they aren’t known to play with Firmino making all his appearances from the right hand side, even though he plays off a striker for Brazil and did a great job in that role for Hoffenheim last season. Danny Ings coming off the left wing is another misuse of resources.

Flops such as Fabio Borini, Iago Aspas, Rickie Lambert and Luis Alberto would also be considered to be unlucky, as they were never truly given a real opportunity by Rodgers to show what they can do. The problem Liverpool have is that they know he is a talented coach, but leaving him to waste money summer after summer cannot last much longer for a club like Liverpool. Can he really get this team into the top 4? Is there a system he could use to get Benteke looking the player we all know he can be? Can Milner and Henderson really be the answer in the centre of his midfield? The answer to all is yet to be seen but at this stage I would the answer is no.  I really do not think he is the man to take this club forward, but ultimately if he is given time how long will he have at Liverpool?
