Four reasons Man United could be title favourites

1) The poor form of others

United’s start to the season has been good without being amazing. Let’s not forget that they lost 2-1 at Swansea having looked comfortable at 1-0 up. They also ended up drawing 0-0 to Newcastle on game week two. This wasn’t the stuff of potential champions. They have however been aided and abetted by some shocking play from their rivals. Man City lost two on the spin in poor fashion to allow United top whilst Chelsea have been all over the place, struggling to get any momentum going. United might emerge as favourites largely thanks to the ineptitude of their rivals.

2) Manchester United signings

Having struggled for goals early on United were bold and signed Anthony Martial for a fee of £36 million potentially rising to £58 million, a huge sum. Martial is a teenager but introduced himself with a fine goal against Liverpool. He now has three in three and got an assist at the weekend. Martial will be considered a bargain buy if United win the title. They also signed well in terms of bringing in Morgan Schneiderlin and right back Darmian.

3) Keeping David De Gea

Without De Gea that United back line looks a lot weaker. Now however it has at least one world class component. De Gea signing a new deal was a crucial bit of business for United following a botched transfer to Real Madrid. Madrid’s loss was United’s gain. De Gea made some crucial saves versus Liverpool in his return to the side and also kept a clean sheet at the weekend. Over the course of the season he would be worth several points.

4) Defensive improvements

Defensively the side struggled last year but have performed  better this season. Man United have conceded five goals which on paper is the joint best defensive record. They’ve kept four clean sheets in their seven league games and the improvement in defence has certainly had an impact. Chris Smalling has been an ever present in the side and has definitely stepped up his game having come with high hopes from Fulham several seasons ago.

United’s odds of winning the title have shortened with for football because of their recent ascent to the top. But, will their rivals refind their form?
