Antoine Griezmann, one of the standout stars of Euro 2016 for the past few seasons, may be on the verge of a move to the Premier League. According to The Metro, the France forward has stated that if Diego Simeone leaves his post at Atletico Madrid, he will be open to offers from top clubs.
Griezmann’s performances for France in the Euros may lead title-chasing clubs to ramp up their interest in the player. He scored four goals in the team’s journey to the semi-final and, after the clinical defeat of Iceland, the 25-year-old found himself at odds of 4/5 in the Euro 2016 betting to claim the Golden Boot. One of the stand-out stars of this summer’s competition, the former Real Sociedad player has shown the world his incredible abilities, scoring some beautiful goals in the process.
Griezmann can play as a right-winger or a centre-forward, and has scored forty-four league goals in two seasons for Atletico, illustrating his keen eye for goal. Many elite clubs have expressed interest in the player, who has the potential to go on to become one of the world’s best.
The latest reports suggest that Jose Mourinho may be trying to acquire the forward’s services at Manchester United, as he aims to continue building his team of superstars. Zlatan Ibrahimovic has already completed a move to the club, and there are likely to be a few more big names arriving before the window closes. The Portuguese is also a big fan of Gareth Bale, and Griezmann’s compatriot, Paul Pogba.
Diego Simeone has enjoyed great success at Atletico, considering the club are always in the shadow of Real Madrid and Barcelona. Griezmann has flourished under the Argentine’s management and is sure to show loyalty if Simeone stays with the club.
Simeone’s work with the Spanish club has not gone unnoticed, though, and Paris Saint-Germain may be looking to tie up a deal with the tactician. The French giants need someone who can deliver the Champions League and, with most of the world’s most prestigious managers already tied into new contracts elsewhere, there aren’t many around who the club’s owners would feel are worthy. If the club make a convincing offer, Simeone may depart.
This would be good news for Mourinho as he looks to bolster his squad for the new season. There are already question marks over Juan Mata’s future at Old Trafford, as the former Chelsea boss sold the Spaniard upon his return to Stamford Bridge. Griezmann would be a straight swap for the player who normally operates from the right side of midfield.
If United manage to swoop for Griezmann, their attack would surely be one of the most formidable in the league. Anthony Martial would continue on the left, Ibrahimovic would operate in the centre, and Griezmann would slot in on the right.
