Jamie Vardy has scored 22 Premier League goals and is one of the frontrunners for the PFA Player of the Year Award. He has also been named in the PFA Team of the Year 2016 alongside fellow Englishman, Harry Kane, who is the Premier League top scorer with 24 goals. It is fair enough that these two receive plaudits for their goalscoring exploits this season which have lit up the Premier League. However it’s shocking that Sergio Aguero hasn’t even been included in the Team of the Year as well as being omitted from the Player of the Year shortlist for the 4th year in a row!
The Argentine striker has worked wonders in the league this season with a highlight being that he recorded 5 goals in a single game this season. If Vardy or Kane scored 5 in one game, every follower of English football would have sent the internet into meltdown saying how they should be nominated for the Ballon D’or. When Sergio Aguero does this, the reaction is more muted and it gets forgotten within a few days. Have you ever seen memes with Aguero’s face photoshopped next to the Ballon D’Or like Kane and Vardy have been subject to in the past? Whilst I’m not denying that there are obviously many people who praise Aguero, it is nowhere near the level as what the level of praise would have been for Vardy and Kane. Aguero has just become the 2nd fastest Premier League player to hit 100 domestic goals and is up there with the likes of Shearer and Henry – this clearly shows that he deserves to gain more recognition for his feats and he is probably the best player in the Premier League right now as a result.
It is understandable that the likes of Vardy, Kane, Kante etc. have performed amazingly this season which is why they are in the Team of the Year however Aguero is in the upper echelons of football; deserved to be compared with the likes of Suarez, Messi and Ronaldo. The fact that players like Vardy and Kante who have only performed to a high standard for one season and are in the team of the year is a double standard in my opinion. Aguero has consistently performed to a high standard for City and won the Golden Boot last season with 26 goals. Surely, being the Golden Boot holder deserves a place in the team of the year? The very fact that the man who single handedly won Manchester City the title and has torn defences to shreds every season for the past 5 years has never been in the Team of the Year is a shambles.
Further evidence to prove that Aguero is miles ahead of Kane and Vardy is that he has played 830 minutes less than Vardy and 879 less minutes than Kane. This means that he has played just over 9 games less than the English duo yet he has scored the same amount as Jamie Vardy and is only on 2 less than Harry Kane. The whole nation have been astonished at how well Vardy and Kane have been playing this season but Aguero who has matched them despite playing 9 games less hasn’t even been mentioned in the same breath. This is simply baffling and proves just how underrated the incredible Argentine is.
