Since Jurgen Klopp took over at Anfield, the future of Belgium striker Christian Benteke has looked unclear. Benteke doesn’t fit into the Liverpool style of play right now with the high tempo pressing game, and not the element of direct passing that he thrived on while at Aston Villa. The importance of playing for Belgium at the upcoming European Championships might prompt a short term move away from the club.
With Liverpool pursuing a move to bring Alex Teixeira to Anfield, playing time might become even less than Benteke is getting right now, so a move might just benefit both Liverpool and the player. Being used as a target man to change games from losing positions and playing with the youngsters in the recent FA Cup ties against Exeter would not be what Benteke expected when making his big money move during the summer of 2015. Injuries have hampered the start to his Liverpool career, but despite recovering from these injuries Klopp doesn’t look to see Benteke in his first team plans. After the first six months at the Merseyside club, the general view would have to be that the striker is high transfer ‘flop’, certainly not the first that Liverpool have had in recent seasons.
Despite currently being the clubs top goal scorer in the Premier League with six goals the club may just look to cash in on the striker if he doesn’t come into the plans of Jurgen Klopp. There are reports in the Midlands, that Aston Villa are looking to bring their former fans favourites back in a loan deal to try and keep the club in the Premier League. Also West Brom are reported to be open to taking the Belgian striker on loan should they sell troublesome striker Saido Berahino. Surely a move at this stage of the season for Benteke would be a poor decision for Liverpool, even if it was just a loan move. The big striker possess more to his game than he gets credited for, he does not have blistering pace, however he does have good technique and has a good touch especially linking up play. The Alex Teixeira move doesn’t make a lot of sense of the club, a fantastic talent but is a player in the same mould as Coutinho, Firmino and Lallana. Klopp needs to give Benteke the chance to redeem the massive fee Liverpool paid for him and change part of his style to accommodate the Belgium international.
